You Don't Need a GPS.

Do You Know How to Get There?

In partnership with

Maybe you’ve heard the saying, “Failing to plan is planning to fail.”

There is a lot of wisdom in that.

If you don’t have a plan of action, how do you expect to reach your goal?

Often, you don’t.

As leaders, it is up to us to chart the course from point A to point B.

We should prepare as much as we can in the beginning but be flexible enough in that plan to adapt to any problems that arise.

When I am not writing newsletters, I am a project manager. Trust me when I say this: You will face problems.

If you are diligent in your planning you can prepare for some of these problems so that you can face them and move forward without breaking stride.

Others you will have to adapt to on the fly. But the more experience you have and the preparation you do will make your ability to adapt that much better.

While it is up to the leader to chart the course, it is important for the leader to take input from teammates and subject matter experts.

What do I mean by this?

Allowing the people on your team to help make decisions not only gives you a different perspective but also gives your teammates a sense of ownership over the project. (Remember the Influence concept of Unity from a few weeks ago?)

When you talk to subject matter experts, you talk to people who have faced the same problem you’re facing and learned how to overcome it. Shortcut your learning by learning from their mistakes.
