The other day I went to a graduation party for a guy I work with.

I knew I had to tell you about it when I left.

The guy’s name is Matt and he just finished his MBA. During the day he is the Operations Manager where I work and was working on his degree at night.

With graduation in sight, Matt’s wife threw him a surprise party that his friends, family, and a couple of coworkers were invited to.

After Matt’s initial surprise to see everyone, the speeches began.

As Operations Manager, Matt has a clear role as a leader at work. During the speeches, it was clear that his leadership extended beyond the four walls of the manufacturing floor he runs.

From people he’s worked with to neighbors and family a few people had to fight back tears, some unsuccessfully, during their speeches. They were not only congratulating him on completing his MBA but thanking him for the positive influence he has had on their lives.

Often they told him how he inspired them to continue their education and push themselves to get certifications.

The common theme was that Matt truly cared about the people in his life. He cared enough to push those around him to better their situations and not let circumstances be an excuse not to pursue their goals.

That is what a good leader does. They invest in their people and their people respond with loyalty and admiration.
