I Had To Rewrite This...
Once I Realized, I Deleted Everything.
When I had the idea to write this email I figured I was connecting two dots and coming up with something new.
I was just about to finish writing but then I realized…
There was a quote I heard a while back that perfectly captures both concepts already.
So I deleted everything I wrote and this is my second attempt. Let me tell you my thought process first.
I see on those motivational TikToks/ Instagram reels all the time of The Rock saying the quote:
One day or day one?
I thought it was a great way to look at your goals and reframe them so that you actually start working toward them. I’ve caught myself falling into the trap of saying one day I’ll do this or do that but never actually moving closer to that goal.
The other concept I had in my head was one that I had picked up while going to AA meetings.
Tomorrow I could be black-out-drunk partying in Vegas but for now I’m going to be sober just one more day.
The program has a lot of little sayings and ideas that they repeat but one that comes up quite commonly is the idea of being sober just one more day.
Reframing sobriety, or your goals, in this way makes the daunting idea of it and makes it manageable and not so scary. Not focusing on the destination but on the next step in the journey.
I haven’t read it yet but I think this idea behind Ed Mylett’s book The Power of One More too.
When I had these two concepts in my head I was feeling kind of good about myself because I thought I was bringing together two concepts but then…
Que the epiphany.
I remembered the quote from Denzel Washington.
Without commitment, you’ll never start but more importantly without consistency you’ll never finish.
The quote captures both concepts beautifully.
You win this one Denzel…
