Over the past few weeks, we’ve explored Influence.

We have looked at Influence techniques that get people to take action so far.

Getting people to take action is a critical leadership skill.

In my opinion, those are all great, when they come from a strong Influential Foundation.

What is that Influential Foundation these techniques stand on?

You!

Who you are is the foundation of your ability to influence others.

John Maxwell identifies 7 areas about ourselves that if we work on and develop will have a massive impact on our ability to influence people.

  1. Character. Are you someone with a strong moral character? Being someone of high integrity, loyalty and honesty goes a long way.

  2. Who you are. We’ve all heard the saying, “Sometimes it’s not what you know but who you know.” Networking will open many doors for you.

  3. Knowledge. (The flip side of that coin) If you’ve got no idea what you’re talking about how can you lead a team toward accomplishing a goal?

  4. Intuition. What does your gut tell you? Sometimes as a leader, you have to work off very little information. Your ability to sense intangible factors will point you in the right direction.

  5. Your experience. Have you made mistakes previously that taught you a lesson about how things should be done? You’ve fallen down and were able to pick yourself back up.

  6. Past Success. Accomplishing a goal previously tends to mean that you know the path it took to get you there.

  7. Ability. What skills do you bring to the table? There is a difference between being a coach and being a leader. If you do not help the team move toward the goal you are simply just coaching.
