The story Jocko uses to describe this is the story of the boat crews in the Navy Seals during Hell Week swapping team leaders.

They took the designated leader from the top performing boat crew and the leader from the worst performing boat crew and swapped them.

Quickly, the best-performing boat crew fell to the bottom of the pack with their new leader, and the previously worst-performing crew climbed to the top.
