If you are like me, your drive for self development and self improvement comes from the sense of not being enough.

It is an insecurity many of us deal with that is the underlying driver of how we interact with the world.

For myself, it is something that I don’t always consciously realize is driving me.

But I can look back on situations like pushing for a promotion, focusing on my health/ nutrition, or being more of a people pleaser than being myself and see that it comes from a place of not feeling like enough.

I was revisiting the book The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem over the weekend and this quote stood out to me.

While I do agree that we all have value and should feel like we are enough, I am conflicted with this idea.

In my experience, this feeling of not being enough is not always the best to live with but without its motivation I wouldn’t be in the position I am today.

Many of the positive changes that I have made throughout my life has been a direct result of the personal development journey that I have been on. Which has been driven by the insecurity of not feeling like I am enough.

Currently, I do not believe there is a perfect motivation for anything. Everything comes with a good and a bad, a good with an evil, a Yin with a Yang.

I could be wrong.

But the feeling like we are not enough is a powerful motivation that drives many people towards success. However, we still have to have a positive view of ourself.

That is the difficult balance we need to achieve.

It is a battle that is unique to each of us. We should work on improving our self-image without losing that motivational edge.

I like the approach, “I may not be good enough for the world, but as long as I am making progress and getting closer then I am good enough for me.”
