Did you know that 70% of communication is nonverbal?

That’s right. What you say often doesn’t matter.

Experts estimate that what you say is only about 7% of what is actually being communicated.

So while many of us are focused on saying the right thing in certain situations, we’re focused on the wrong thing.

I made this mistake a lot when I was younger.

But now that you’re aware, you don’t have to make the same mistake I did.

There are two major categories of nonverbal communication: body language and vocal image.

Vocal image is comprised of things like tonality and rate of speech.

If you’re interested in vocal image watch some of Vin Giang’s content on YouTube. It’s a fascinating topic but kinda hard to explain through an email.

The more straightforward of the nonverbal communication areas is body language.

This is also a fascinating topic. There is a lot to dive into.

For now, here are 3 body language tips that change the way people look at you for the better.

  1. Take an extra 1-2 seconds before you smile and let your smile completely take over your face. Real smiles don’t affect just the mouth but reach all the way up to the eyes. Waiting that extra second also gives the impression that the smile is more genuine.

  2. Maintain eye contact. (This is huge!) Your ability to look someone in the eyes communicates confidence. Even when you feel shy or intimidated, keep eye contact. It also shows that you are actually invested in the conversation.

  3. Fix your posture. Stand up straight and drop your shoulders. Not only does this display confidence and comfortability but it also will help you feel that way too.
